Christian EducationChristian Education / Sunday School:Please find current resources for Children here. “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these’." (Matthew 19:14) “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these’." (Matthew 19:14) Children are a key part of the congregation. The 10.30 a.m. service begins with the Dean’s children’s talk during which children sit in a circle and are encouraged to talk and think (and often laugh). Then they run off in different directions. Kids aged 5 and under go to Karen Cooper in The Nursery in a colourful, bright room full of toys with a child-sized washroom. Children say a prayer, get a short lesson and a snack, may do a craft and always have lots of playtime. Karen also runs this program at the 9 a.m. service. Kids from ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 11 have Sunday school classes in meeting rooms during the 10:30 a.m. service only taught by Gay Osler, Elissa Barnard and Sarah Cooper. Bill Black leads the older pre-teen and teen group. Youth return for Communion. In a normal year Bill Black’s group leads two services and helps with outreach; the 6 to 11s run a bake sale with proceeds going to charities they decide upon. All kids are welcome to participate in the Christmas pageant. During COVID-19 restrictions there is a Saturday 4 p.m. Zoom service for kids from the congregation and beyond .Please email the office at cathedralchurch@eastlink.ca if you’d like to participate. This December the Dean led the congregation and Sunday School kids in a project to decorate the church with handmade snowflakes and during Lent a similar project with butterflies. The Saturday Zoom folks baked Christmas treats for diners at Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission in Halifax and are sending school supplies to Nunavut as a Lenten Project.
